David Morris unveils six new designs to celebrate 60 extraordinary years as ‘The London Jeweller’
This summer marks 60 years since David Morris first burst onto the London jewellery scene, and to celebrate this remarkable milestone the house has created a collection of six, one-of-a-kind pieces inspired by iconic designs through the decades.
Established in London in 1962, on the cusp of the Sixties fashion revolution, David Morris has since gained a worldwide reputation for creating pieces of exceptional colour and craft, by using the rarest-of-all gemstones. In celebration of this landmark birthday, the brand has looked both forward and back to create designs that combine its storied heritage, house signatures and continued style evolution. These pieces harness the technologies of today alongside the house’s legendary handcraftsmanship. With its oversized, voluminous silhouette, the Ribbon necklace captures the spirit of the fashion and jewellery trends that emerged in the 1960s, injected with a colourful and contemporary twist. The collar of this spectacular necklace is designed to evoke a scrolling ribbon of precious metal embellished with white diamonds, creating a striking profile whilst appearing beautifully light. At the necklace’s centre sits a spectacular 41-carat Australian black opal; a gemstone that is synonymous with David Morris designs. Inspired by the ‘60s trend for matching, two complementary smaller black opals have been transformed into eye-catching drop earrings designed to be worn with the necklace.

The arrival of the 1970s brought a fascination with new materials, methods and the modernist design movement. The collection’s Tetris cuff draws inspiration from some of London’s iconic brutalist buildings and is a design that presented numerous technical challenges in order to achieve the piece’s complex sprung structure and movement. The pairing of pink and white diamonds has been a David Morris signature since the very beginning, and this piece re-invents a classic combination in an ultra-modern setting. Each of the design’s facets is bordered by a row of square diamonds in a different size, with incredibly rare blossom-pink diamonds nestled beneath the striking elongated cushions. From concept to completion this astonishing cuff was in the making for over three years.

The Electra ring offers a contemporary take on the bold jewels and glossy glamour that came to define the ‘80s. This ultra-modern twist on a statement cocktail ring plays with angles and asymmetry to re-imagine the decade’s decadent style. The ring is available in two colourful hues, electric-blue Paraiba Tourmaline and scarlet Spinel – a gemstone that’s becoming increasingly popular and collectable – with the intense colour of each brilliantly amplified by a graphic zig-zag motif in white diamonds. With ‘90s fashion currently enjoying a renaissance, the collection’s Purity choker offers a homage to the decade.
Jeremy Morris drew upon minimalism, adding drama via the sizeable briolettes and a dash of David Morris colour with vibrant, orangey-pink Spinel. The design is also adjustable so that it can be
worn high on the neck as a choker, or lower on the décolleté. The dawn of the new millennium brought a global technology revolution, symbolised in the anniversary collection’s geometric-inspired set. The Geo necklace updates classic white diamonds via unusual and striking hexagon-cut diamonds, which are paired with round white diamonds and set within a beautiful, fan-inspired necklace design. The Maze hexagon diamond hoop earrings take the house’s signature combination of pink and white diamonds in an exciting new direction via hexagon-cut white diamonds interspersed with incredibly rare, vibrant pink round diamonds.

The final piece of the collection is the breathtaking Vision necklace; a piece that beautifully embodies David Morris’ past, present and future. The creative colour combination of neon-bright Paraiba Tourmaline and deep-blue sapphires has, in recent years, become a signature of the house. This extraordinary piece combines over 114 carats of the world’s most prized Ceylon sapphires with Paraiba Tourmaline from Brazil. This design is a piece that represents the very essence of David Morris, and a fitting celebration of 60 years of glorious colour, design ingenuity and technical mastery. “The jewellery houses in the early ‘60s were old-fashioned, then my parents came along and opened their first boutique in Mayfair and it was very ‘swinging’ London. They were using materials and gemstones that other people weren’t using at the time, and innovative designs and unusual jewels are still very much what we’re known for.”
“The manufacturing process is the epicentre of David Morris,” continues Jeremy Morris, who took the helm of his father’s eponymous brand in 2007 “Making amazing jewellery is my first love,
from collecting the gemstones and coming up with the design concepts to refining the technical details and building the jewellery – and that’s how my father started, and brought me up. I remember running around the workshop as a child and have a very vivid memory of putting pennies through the metal mill, with guys in bright white jackets making jewellery at the benches. We remain a family-run business, making our pieces by hand in London, and sixty years on we are still leaders in the fashion of jewellery.”
